NE14 Thermokarst Field Site

We initiated monitoring and sampling at the NE14 Thaw Slump in June 2009.

Active Layer/Permafrost Monitoring:
Lewkowicz, Gooseff, and Godsey deployed 6 ground temperature monitoring stations and a met station from 22 Jun to 23 Jun. All sensors were functional as of 01 Jul. All measurements are being recorded hourly.

Ground temperature monitoring stations are recording temperatures generally at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 cm deep. If holes were drilled deeper than 1 m, we are also monitoring temperature at 120, 150, 200, 250, and 300 cm, depending on depth.
We are also monitoring soil moisture at 0, 20, and 40 cm deep at 3 stations, 1 in the old slump, 1 in the active slump, and 1 in the reference ground (at the met station).
The meteorological station is measuring:
- air temperature
- relative humidity
- solar radiation (short wave)
- wind speed & direction
- rainfall
- barometric pressure

Following up on discussions at the ARCSS/TK all scientists meeting, the following naming convention has been proposed:
NE14TS01.xx is the site code for the active slump
NE14TS02.yy is the site code for the old, stabilized thaw slump west of active feature

  2. Crosby, Okal, Stukey, Godsey are LiDAR scanning NE-14 between June 30 and July 9.

    This scan will cover both NE14-TS01 and -TS02. For ground control, we established points around the perimeter of the slump using survey-grade GPS. These are marked with orange flagging and naming convention: NE14-TS01-CP001. We also established control points using vertical PVC pipe staked into the ground over known locations. These will be used to spatially correlate the different scans that we collect. Their location was determined using a total station who's position was located by resection.

    We are scanning all of NE14-TS01 at a 4cm resolution and the older slump, NE14-TS02 at 10 cm resolution (due to heavy vegetation). Results from this scan will initially serve as proof-of concept for the LiDAR and as a base map for locating team sampling/measurement sites.

  3. Godsey, Gooseff, Stuckey installed transects up the axes of NE14-TS01 and NE14-TS02 plus additional radial transects above the current failure face. Gooseff and Godsey completed a synoptic survey of active layer depth and near-surface soil moisture/electrical conductivity/surface temperature at each transect point on Jul 3.
